Is DTX Ready for November? What the Construction Timeline Actually Means

Avelo's fares are open for booking, and that's led some travel writers to ask a fair question: is the airport itself actually going to be ready? Selling tickets is the easy part of opening a commercial airport. Everything else — construction, federal certification, security staffing — is harder to see from the outside, and it's still in progress.

Here's what's genuinely still open as of late August 2026: the passenger terminal's interior finishes, aircraft apron and taxiway work, and fuel farm installation were all still underway. The airport also still needs to complete FAA Part 139 certification — the safety and operations certification required of any airport handling scheduled commercial service — and stand up a fully staffed TSA checkpoint with credentialing and baggage-screening systems in place. None of that is unusual for an airport at this stage a couple of months before launch, but none of it is finished yet either, and there's no public timeline for exactly when each piece gets signed off.

This isn't a reason to panic, and it isn't a reason to assume everything's fine either — it's just genuinely unresolved. Large airport construction and certification projects regularly do come together in the final weeks before opening, but they can also slip. McKinney hasn't given any public indication of a delay, and Avelo hasn't pulled November inventory from sale. But "no bad news yet" isn't the same as "confirmed on schedule."
