Planning Florida Vacations From McKinney

Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Fort Myers — how to choose and combine Florida destinations.

By Editorial Team

Florida is not one destination — it's at least four distinct trips from McKinney. Theme parks (Orlando), Gulf beaches (Tampa and Fort Myers), and Atlantic coast (Fort Lauderdale) each deserve separate planning.

First-time Florida travelers from North Texas often default to Orlando. That's the right call for families with young kids. Couples and empty-nesters may prefer Tampa or Fort Myers for a slower pace.

Hurricane season runs June through November. Book refundable fares and travel insurance if you're traveling August through October.

Multi-city Florida trips work if you rent a car. Orlando to Tampa is about 90 minutes; Fort Myers to Fort Lauderdale is about two hours.

When McKinney commercial service launches, expect Florida routes to be among the first announcements. Until then, DFW offers daily options to all four gateways.
