Flying From DFW and Love Field While McKinney Builds Commercial Service

McKinney National Airport's commercial service is real now, but it's 11 routes on one airline — Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Fort Myers on Avelo from November 2026, then Denver, Atlanta, Sarasota, Nashville, New Orleans, and West Palm Beach from mid-December. For everything outside that list, DFW International and Dallas Love Field remain the two airports Collin County actually flies out of, and picking between them is worth thinking through rather than defaulting to whichever one you flew last time.

DFW is the safer default for anything international, anything on a legacy carrier (American, Delta, United), and anything where connections matter — it's one of the largest hub airports in the country, which means more nonstop options to more places, more recovery flights if something goes wrong, and more lounge and terminal amenities if you've got a long layover ahead of you. The tradeoff is size: DFW's five terminals and inter-terminal Skylink train add real time to a connection, and the drive from central McKinney runs 30 to 45 minutes depending on whether you catch US-380 or the Dallas North Tollway during a bad stretch of traffic.

Love Field is a different airport entirely — a single, compact terminal that's almost entirely Southwest Airlines. If Southwest flies where you're going, Love Field is usually faster to navigate end to end even when the drive itself isn't dramatically shorter, because you're skipping DFW's terminal-to-terminal shuffle and its longer security queues at peak hours. Southern Collin County residents also get a real drive-time advantage here that doesn't always show up if you're comparing straight-line distance — check your specific route before assuming DFW wins just because it's the airport everyone defaults to.

The mistake most McKinney-area travelers make is comparing flight price alone. Factor in the drive, and DFW's slightly cheaper fare can disappear fast once you add 20 extra minutes each way and a longer walk to your gate. Compare total door-to-gate time for your specific trip, not just the number on the booking page.

For early-morning departures — anything boarding before 7 a.m. — staying at a hotel near the airport the night before is usually worth it over driving in that morning, especially from McKinney where a bad traffic morning on 380 or the Tollway can turn a comfortable buffer into a sprint to the gate. Both DFW and Love Field have on-airport and nearby hotel options with 24-hour shuttle service, and most run cheaper than you'd expect for what you're buying: a guaranteed on-time arrival at security.

If you're renting a car at your destination rather than getting picked up, book it before you leave rather than at the counter — rental counters at both DFW and Love Field routinely run out of the class of car you actually wanted by mid-morning, especially during Florida and Las Vegas peak season.

Once you're comparing a specific trip, run the numbers on DTX too if it's one of Avelo's 11 routes. A shorter drive to McKinney, no connection at all, and a four-gate terminal with minimal security lines can outweigh a marginally cheaper DFW fare — that tradeoff is exactly what these two established airports have never been able to offer Collin County travelers before.
